The United Kingdom Supreme Court ruled trans-women are legally not women on April 16, 2025, similar to the Trump’s Regime linking gender to biological sex. What many people may be unaware of is Harry Potter creator, J. K. Rowling, funded the trial with nearly $100,000 to rule against trans-women. This ruling continues to attack the most vulnerable minority in the world.
Transgender people have always existed. This statement is not an ideology, as some political pundits like to claim. It is a fact. Indigenous cultures celebrated individuals who encapsulated the spirit of two genders before western colonization began. The term two-spirit derives from the Ojibwe tribe’s term: Anishnaabemowin and coined in 1990 during an intertribal conference. In the Pacific, Hawaiians and Tahitians use the term Mahu from the legend of Kapaemahu. Both cultures celebrated and respected Mahu. Uganda pre-colonial times used the term: okule and agule to signify two-spirited people in their culture. Colonization enforced the idea of interlocking sex with gender.
Presently, our studies in sociology and anthropology have made great progress. We have learned to accept different cultures and beliefs in our daily life. Or so we were to believe. Presently, it seems more progressive countries are digressing, ignoring the facts about cultural human history. Attacking trans-women under the guise of “protecting women,” while legislating laws against the same group of people they are claiming to protect (most recently, restricting voting rights of women whose name does not match birth certificates). These legislatures overlook how bills created to target trans-women also affect cis-women as well.
Rowling is one of many women who claim to want to “protect women spaces from men.” Years ago, Rowling wrote an essay sharing with the world how she survived an abusive relationship. Using this experience as a reason to prevent people assigned male at birth from entering women spaces with a fearful claim of “opening the doors to men.” Women who share the same thought process as Rowling overlook how nothing prevents a man from entering a woman’s space. Not a sign or unattended changing rooms. Rowling refused to stop there. She wrote a book about a man who “claimed to transition” to attack women. More evidence of Rowling’s ignorance and choice of fear-mongering. Transitioning requires unnecessary work for him to do so. What are the requirements to transition?
First, anyone transitioning from their assigned gender at birth must undergo counseling with psychological professionals before starting hormone replacement therapy. Add to counseling and medical treatments, a person may choose to undergo surgical transformations as well. Each surgery design to transform the physical appearance of a person to match societal expectations of…gender. Finally, calculate the amount of money spent for legal documents to align with one’s transition equals…no reason to attack women. What horny male will complete all these requirements to “attack women?” Furthermore, starting hormone replacement therapy may affect his libido.
Rowling may celebrate her “win” with the Supreme Court, but protests against her quickly followed. People of the UK accept a person’s gender identity, regardless of what ideology the affluent wish to pay for. In America, Americans continue to protest for the rights of everyone’s existence and inclusion, regardless of the fascist regime rising within her borders. Trans-people exist and will never be erased. As people rise to defend their civil rights, hope will continue to shine for this marginalized group of beautiful people. Protect them and shower them with the support they need in these politically hostile times.
